Mental as Anything

Australian band Mental as Anything does househ...

Mental as Anything were always special to me for one simple reason. Years ago I bought a guitar from Peter O’Doherty. Peter is the bass player of the Mentals. At the time that I bought that guitar from him he was playing lead guitar in a High School band that a mate of mine played in.

Mental as Anything had not formed at that stage. Peter O’Doherty’s big brother is “Reg Mombassa” Reg is his stage name.

The Mentals became famous as a pub pop rock band with lots of good times. I only saw them once in Sydney at somewhere like the Enmore Theatre. A good gig.

Some of their zany songs included. “If you leave me can I come too” “the nips are getting bigger” amongst others.  Mental as Anything are a great Aussie Rock band of the 80’s and 90’s

Nowadays Pete and Reg perform as Dog Trumpet.

John Mellencamp

Cover of
Cover of Scarecrow

Blogging about John Mellencamp could be a long blog.  I will keep it short. Great music and great musicians. I heard a rumour years ago that Mellencamp  insisted that his band all learn a new instrument for one of the albums. I think it might have been his Scarecrow album.I don’t know how true this is but it rang true to what sort of person Mellencamp is.

I saw John Mellencamp in concert in Sydney back in the 80’s I think. Great gig. This was at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. He certainly rocked and rolled. A big band complete with fiddles and keyboards and lots of guitars. The band was the same band that John Mellencamp had been using for most of his career. They rocked.

Would I go and see him again?  You bet! John Mellencamp who used to go by Johnny Cougar is a favorite of mine.

Midnight Oil rockin’ Polly

"Beds are Burning" single cover

Midnight Oil the great Aussie rock band from the 70’s 80’s and 90’s spawned the Labor Politician Peter Garrett. not surprising really as the majority of their songs were political in some way or other.

I never saw Midnight Oil live in Australia. I guess the whole Midnight Oil politics thing didn’t grab me then. I like a lot of their songs. As songs. Not as political statements.

These days Peter Garrett from Midnight Oil is a Labor Minister for something. I hope that he is doing what he protested about via his music for 3 decades.

Cold Chisel caps off concerts – v8supercars.com.au

Cover of "Chisel"

Wow what a  gig this would have been to see. A true blast from the past as Cold Chisel blew the V8 super cars off the track!

A rapturous crowd danced and sang their way through headline act Cold Chisel’s live performance last night, capping off a massive concert program at the Sydney Telstra 500 this weekend.

The legendary Australian rock band played almost two hours worth of songs, including hits Khe Sanh and My Baby at the ANZ Stadium within the Sydney Telstra 500 precinct.

Cold Chisel also gave two encore performances, much to the delight of the adoring crowd who were witnessing what was possibly the band’s last ever performance.

The crowd was made up of Cold Chisel die-hards and those who had come along to experience all aspects of the Sydney Telstra 500, which has so far seen a total of more than 120,000 people attend.

Bon Jovi certainly made an impact back in the 80s with their “Slippery when wet” album. They have hardly stopped since. Different Jon Bon jovi projects and ritchie sambora projects intertwine with Bon Jovi the band. This creates a body of work that is certainly more than respectable. Its power pop, stadium rock, call it what you want there are some great tunes and great rock over the last over 20 years..

Loud as ever ACDC

When they told us back in 1974 that the band coming to our school dance was a band called AC/DC we had no idea what we were about to experience. The beginning of one of the all time great Rock bands. The beginning of one of the great Heavy Metal guitarists career. We had no idea that this is what we were seeing! 35 years later people are in awe when I tell them about seeing ACDC in concert at our school dance.

AC/DC rocked us and rolled us. Angus Young wore his shorts and school uniform and Bon Scott was the lead singer. What a night at the Avalon Community center in Sydney Australia. This was the only time that I ever saw ACDC I was about 16 years old and it was 1974 at my school dance.( Actually the S.A.P.A dance for the Students Association of the Pittwater Area)

AC/DC is touring right now with their BlackIce tour. Visit their website www.ACDC.com to find out details. Here are some reviews of the AC/DC gigs

KISS Still rockin’

Paul Stanley in a KISS concert in Helsinki, Fi...

It seems like a lifetime ago that we all headed out to the Sydney showground to see KISS live. I have no memory of who the support band was but I do remember being disappointed when the soundcheck track of Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin was cut short for KISS to come onstage. Oh well.

The KISS gig was good. As expected with lots of glitz and glam and Rock’n'Roll. Main memory was ACE shooting his guitar rocket or fireworks high into the air.

A great gig. And they are still doing it. What a great band.

Cold Chisel back together

SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA - DECEMBER 05: Ian Moss and...

Chisel getting back together is always worth a trip down memory lane.

I first heard of Cold Chisel back in 1978 when my friend Ray Cochrane (now of Pygmy Beat)lent me an audio tape of the new band with the banned from radio song Khe Sanh. 3 weeks later I still had the tape and Ray asked for it back. I had to to listen one more time and he got it back the next day! Cold Chisel had made an impact on me. the lyrics, the guitar, the driving rhythms, the energy.

All this and I hadn’t seen them live.

Here are some reviews of their gig. Shame I am thousands of miles away!

Cold Chisel live up to expectations

1 Dec 2009
Cold Chisel fans ignited with excitement Saturday night when rumours blared true with the band reuniting for a special “rehearsal performance” at the Live at the Crossroads concert.
